A matter of Moms !!!

Every generation is different. We try to break free of that umbilical bond and try to create and be something new, different and hopefully better. Nothing surprising or new, change is important.
I am a 90’s kid. Which means when I grew up, I still had those evenings when you played kho-kho in some open field every evening. We weren’t really bothered about World Wide Web..launched just around the time we were young and fresh and full of possibilities, like itself. I had a childhood where I was pampered by the colony aunties more than my mother. Funny, because things were so much simpler then. Now, I don’t know the kid next door even with all my connected world and global village concepts. So that was it, growing up in a middle class society where everyone dreams of a better life someday. Without those EMIs for housing and car loans.
Strangely enough, the most ambitious people amidst the lot were always the Mothers. The ones with jobs and those without..it didn’t really matter to which category they belonged to. Good education was all they cared for. Girls and boys alike for that matter. Instead of teaching us the difference between stale and fresh fishes, these Moms taught us to read the paper every morning, watch and listen to the PM on Independence Day, to read Shakespearean plays (simplified and illustrated) and in the whole process, they gave us the confidence to dream and aim big. These Moms did not understand  the big deal about Internet but made sure that we could attend those computer classes in time. They broke free of the centuries old mindset and set us free. Together they made it possible for their children, for our generation. It seemed so natural then but truth was, that was not the way they grew up. It was almost as if they planned this exclusive childhood for us, a different and better one than theirs. Those Moms wanted us to be free. Somewhere between cooking food for the entire family and being unable to read the morning paper, they realized the need for individuals who could take care of themselves and take on the world someday. Life is so much more than having the perfect family and being called a good Mom..its about being able to do what you want to. And be appreciated for that.
It was important. They brought about the change that gave us a chance at life. Today when I sit there competing with the world, trying to do something worthwhile with my life, I secretly thank my Mom for that chance to wish, dream and follow my heart.
