I hear you
Speaking to me from across the table
While my inner monologue drowns your voice
You seem to be talking about some cousin of yours
And something about cross country calls
Mac lipstick
British foods and Facebook
You tell me about the one time your mother sent you out for biscuits
There were guests in the house
Wait, or was it the same cousin ?
At this point I have tuned out most of it
But watch as you drag on that cigarette
Between your index and middle finger
And the pause right after you let out the smoke
Minor interruptions in between your dialogue you take
You are asking me about food from the menu next
I nod my head
For I didn’t really catch what you just said
I see you all excited and speak to the guy waiting on us
So I figure it’s something you like
You fiddle with your phone for a minute or two
Letting me listen to myself clearly now
But I watch
I watch as you check the scores of that match you told me about I think
Maybe your cousin plays ?
You smile at something – is your team doing well ?
I am too busy in my head to ask
So I just watch you
With a slight smile plastered on my lips,
O’s and ah’s at the right places as I acknowledge
I watch you telling me things
Your hands, mid – air, explaining still
Smiling, smoking, pausing and speaking again
All the while
Thinking to myself
Please be worth it
Please be worth it
Oh God, for once
Just please be worth it
Speaking to me from across the table
While my inner monologue drowns your voice
You seem to be talking about some cousin of yours
